About this place
Fez is often called Morocco’s cultural and spiritual heart, and it doesn’t take long to see why. Home to the world’s oldest university and its oldest continuously operating library, the city wears nearly 1,200 years of history in its stones. The UNESCO-listed medina, Fes el-Bali, is widely regarded as the best-preserved old city in the Arab world and doubles as the planet’s largest car-free urban zone — donkeys and handcarts replace cars in its narrow alleyways. With just over a million residents, Fez balances its status as a living medieval capital with the everyday rhythms of a modern Moroccan metropolis.
The medina itself is the main draw. It’s a dense, labyrinthine quarter where every sense is engaged: the smell of cedar and curing leather, the sound of copper being hammered, and the sight of cobalt-blue ceramics drying in the sun. Beyond the walls, a more European-influenced Ville Nouvelle offers wider boulevards and modern conveniences, but for most visitors the real magic lies within the ancient gates.

Things to Do
- Wander the medina without a fixed route — following the green (Andalusian palaces and gardens), orange (walls and fortifications), or blue marked trails keeps you oriented without diluting the sense of discovery.
- Watch the sunset from a rooftop terrace; many shops and restaurants have them, and the views over the old city are especially dramatic just after dark.
- Get a traditional shave in the medina; it’s remarkably affordable and the attention to detail often includes a trim as well.
- Visit the potteries outside Bab el-Ftouh to see artisans shape clay into a tagine in under a minute, then browse cobalt-blue ceramics direct from the makers.

Best Time to Visit
- The sweet spot is late April through early July, when temperatures average a comfortable 22°C and rainfall is minimal.
- Spring brings lush greenery to the surrounding hills and pleasant daytime temperatures for extended walks in the car-free medina.
- Avoid the hottest months (late July and August) unless you plan to sightsee only in the early morning and late afternoon.
- Winter is cooler and wetter but still manageable; the medina is far less crowded and accommodation prices often dip.

Planning Tips
- Book a licensed guide through your hotel or the official tourism office if you want historical depth; unofficial guides tend to steer you from shop to shop for commission.
- Appear confident even if you’re lost — saying “This way to Bab R’cif, right?” instead of asking openly helps deter false guides.
- Keep a rough map or download an offline navigation app before entering the medina, but be discreet about consulting it in public.
- Agree on taxi fares before getting in; the fixed rate from the airport to the medina or train station is 120 dirham.
- Bargain as a matter of course — every souk claims to be government-regulated, but the only genuine fixed-price shop is the Artisana in the Ville Nouvelle.
- If arriving by train, stay alert for hustlers who approach with stories about closed hotels or visiting relatives; book accommodation in advance and head straight there.
