About this place

Last updated Jul 19, 2026

Erfurt, the capital of Thuringia, is a remarkably well-preserved medieval city at the crossroads of central Germany. Known as the "Thuringian Rome" for its skyline of church spires, it offers an authentic look at a pre-war German city, having largely escaped the heavy bombing of World War II. Its compact, walkable old town is crisscrossed by narrow, pedestrianized streets, green spaces, and little bridges over the Gera River.

The city's historic wealth grew from the woad trade, a plant used for blue dye that financed landmarks like the Krämerbrücke, Europe's longest inhabited bridge. Erfurt is also a city of intellectual heritage, home to a university where Martin Luther once studied, and now a vibrant center blending deep history with modern industries like horticulture and media.
