About this place
Enugu, whose name translates to “Hill Top” in Igbo, is the capital of Enugu State in southeastern Nigeria. Known historically as the Coal City, it grew rapidly after coal was discovered on the Udi Plateau in 1909 and a railway line from Port Harcourt was completed in 1916. Today, it serves as a major hub at the junction of roads from Onitsha, Aba, and Abakaliki, blending its colonial-era architecture with a vibrant modern cultural scene.
Often called the “capital of Igboland” and briefly the capital of the short-lived Republic of Biafra in 1967, Enugu holds deep cultural significance. The city is also a notable Nollywood filming location, adding a creative energy to its streets.
