About this place

Last updated Jul 19, 2026

Embu das Artes is a charming city in the Grande São Paulo region best known as a haven for artists and artisans. Often called simply "Embu," the city's creative identity took root in the 1960s, driven by a strong primitive art movement and the influence of hippie culture that still echoes through its streets today.

Founded from an indigenous settlement and anchored by the 17th-century Nossa Senhora do Rosário church, Embu's history runs deep. The arrival of painter Cássio M'Boy in 1920 set the stage for the city's eventual transformation into a landmark of Brazilian culture, with a thriving community of painters, artists, and craftspeople making their home here.
