About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Emalahleni (still widely known as Witbank) is a large Mpumalanga city built on coal. Its name means "the place of coal," and the mining and power-generation industry dominates the landscape. For most visitors it is a practical stopover on the route between Gauteng and the Kruger National Park, Mbombela, eSwatini, or Mozambique.

The city has grown a small hospitality scene to capture passing tourist spend. Accommodation ranges from no-frills guesthouses to more comfortable business-traveller options, so an overnight break here is perfectly feasible on a self-drive trip.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Book a guesthouse in advance — the selection ranges widely in comfort and price; securing a spot ahead of time helps after a long drive.
  • Fuel up here — Emalahleni’s position on the N4/N12 makes it a practical place to refuel and restock before continuing toward more remote areas.
  • Pack a warm layer, even in spring — early-morning temperatures can dip significantly before the Highveld sun takes hold.
