About this place
Elazığ is a city shaped by water and history, perched in the mountains of Eastern Anatolia at an altitude of 1,067 m. Vast modern reservoir lakes surround it, creating an almost-island feel despite its position on a major highway and rail line. The city developed as a barracks town in the valley below the ancient fortress settlement of Harput, whose hilltop ruins and restored buildings bear witness to centuries of Armenian, Urartian, and Ottoman heritage.
Today, Elazığ serves as a practical and rewarding stop for travelers crossing eastern Turkey. Its compact center offers straightforward amenities, while Lake Hazar, 31 km to the southeast, provides a scenic escape with picnic areas, a rift-valley lake, and even a ski resort on the mountain rising above it.

Planning Tips
- Book trains ahead — the Vangölü Ekspresi runs only twice weekly; reserve tickets via Turkish Railways, especially for couchettes.
- Check the ferry option — from Malatya, a scenic shortcut crosses Karakaya Dam lake three times daily, adding variety to the road journey.
- Rely on dolmuşes — frequent shared minibuses connect the center with Harput; no need for a taxi unless you're heading to Lake Hazar.
- Lake Hazar day trip — pack swimwear and a picnic if visiting in summer; the beaches are rocky, so water shoes are helpful.
- Buy train supplies — the long-distance train has no buffet car; stock up on snacks and water before boarding.
