About this place
El-Obeid (also spelled Al Ubayyid) is a city of about 450,000 people in the Kurdufan region of Sudan. Its name translates to "the White," and it serves as a regional hub with an airport, an oil refinery, and the University of Kordofan, one of the country's largest universities.
Originally founded by Ottoman Egypt in 1821, the city carries layers of 19th‑century history. Today the population is largely Muslim, with a small Christian community and a modest cultural presence including a long‑standing Sudanese‑French centre tied to the university.

Planning Tips
- Pack for heat and sun — lightweight, sun-protective clothing is a must year-round; even in the cooler months, daytime highs can still climb sharply.
- Confirm current travel context — verify safety and entry conditions for Sudan before planning, as the available outline does not cover present-day security or practical logistics.
