About this place
El Jadida is a relaxed coastal town about 100 km south of Casablanca, popular as a seaside escape for Moroccan city dwellers. With long beaches and a slower pace, it offers a welcome change from the intensity of inland cities like Marrakech or Fez.
The town has a modest but interesting heritage, including remnants of Portuguese architecture and the atmospheric Cistern. Its other main industry is fishing, and you'll still see a working harbor alongside the holiday infrastructure. While much of the fancy seafront promenade shows its age, the easygoing atmosphere and lack of hassle are the real draws here.

Things to Do
- Relax at a seafront café or restaurant — especially if this is towards the end of your trip, the town's chilled pace is a perfect wind-down from busier Moroccan cities.
- Experience everyday Moroccan city life — unlike Casablanca, El Jadida lets you soak up the local rhythm without the noise, hassle, or glaring social inequity.
- Wander the Portuguese Citadel — browse the few souvenir shops tucked inside the old fortifications for a low-key cultural break.
- Sip mint tea at the massive central café — located down the main road from the medina entrance, it's an ideal spot for people-watching.

Planning Tips
- Getting here by train — ONCF trains run from Casablanca roughly every two hours (around 1½ hr); from Marrakech expect about eight trains daily (6 hr); from Rabat it's around 3 hr.
- Arriving at the station — a taxi into town costs about 15 dirham, but if none are available you may need to walk to the nearest suburb to find one.
- Bus connections — hourly buses serve Marrakech (4 hr, 70 dirham), with less frequent services from Essaouira (4½ hr, 80–90 dirham) and Agadir (6 hr, 140 dirham).
- Getting around town — El Jadida is walkable, though it can take up to an hour end-to-end; plenty of taxis and several bus lines are available.
- Sleeping rough — if you have a sleeping bag or ground sheet, sleeping on the beach is possible, though you may wake up damp from the salt spray; there's also a campsite at the northeast end of town.
