About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Spreading west from central Hamburg along the Elbe, the Altona and St. Pauli districts blend maritime history with some of the city's most energetic street life. Altona began as an independent fishing village and later thrived as Denmark's second-largest port, giving it a distinct identity before it merged with Hamburg in 1937. Today that past is visible mainly in scattered historic buildings near Lornsenplatz and the riverfront, while much of the district has been filled in with quiet, green postwar residential blocks. St. Pauli is the loud, colorful counterpoint — famously home to the Reeperbahn, a nightlife and red-light strip that draws visitors for everything from musicals and live music to its open, anything-goes storefronts. The adjacent Schanzenviertel and Karolinenviertel neighborhoods add a creative, student-driven pulse of boutiques, cafés, and bars, while upscale Blankenese and village-flavored Ottensen round out the area with charming streets and Elbe views.

Things to See

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Glass-bottle ban in St. Pauli on weekends — From Friday night through Monday morning, glass bottles are prohibited on the streets (fines can be steep); cans and plastic are fine.
  • Use Altona station as a gateway — Hamburg's second-largest rail station serves long-distance trains and puts you steps from both Altona's riverfront and the St. Pauli action.
  • Check Prinz magazine for event listings — The monthly German-language guide (about €1) covers parties, concerts, and club nights across the city.
  • Book St. Pauli tickets early — Home matches at Millerntor are hugely popular and can sell out well in advance.
  • Shop Ottenser Hauptstraße and Mercado for everyday needs — The main shopping streets in Ottensen and the Mercado center near Altona station offer a broad mix of retail.
