About this place
East London is a coastal city in South Africa's Eastern Cape, forming the heart of the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality. Known for its natural deep-water harbour and extensive white-sand beaches, the city offers a blend of outdoor recreation and urban convenience. The surrounding region supports notable horticulture, including some of the country's major tomato-growing areas, thanks to a favorable year-round climate.
Often recognized as a hub for boxing champions, East London also provides access to game reserves where the Big Five can be found, including a lion park remarkably close to the city. The area gained scientific fame in 1938 when a living coelacanth — a fish long thought extinct — was discovered in a local catch.

Planning Tips
- Rent a car — limited public transit means having your own vehicle is the most practical way to reach beaches, game reserves, and nearby towns.
- Use the Little Red Bus from the airport — a pre-bookable, shared shuttle that provides a safe and reliable link to your accommodation.
- Check train schedules — Shosholoza Meyl inter-city trains connect from Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Bloomfontein; MetroRail commuter trains run on reduced weekend services.
- Drive the Romantic Coast Road — the R72 offers a scenic alternative to the N2 when heading toward Port Elizabeth, with great views and coastal towns like Port Alfred.
