About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

East Jerusalem is the historically and culturally rich eastern part of the city, lying adjacent to the famed Old City. While the walled Old City is a destination unto itself, East Jerusalem holds many of the region's most ancient and significant sites, particularly in the City of David, Mount Zion, and the Mount of Olives. This is where Jerusalem began, a fact visible in the layers of archaeology dating back thousands of years.

Today, the area is a complex tapestry of Arab and Jewish neighborhoods, ancient tombs, and hillside vistas. For travelers, it offers a chance to walk through biblical history, from the water tunnels of King Hezekiah to the Garden of Gethsemane, while experiencing a living, modern city.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Walk through Hezekiah's Tunnel — Wade through the thigh-deep water of this 533-meter ancient tunnel, carved to bring water into the City of David. A flashlight and proper water shoes are essential for this unique half-hour underground adventure.
  • Take the dry Canaanite Tunnel — For a different perspective, opt for the shorter, dry path through a narrow crack in the rock, another part of the ancient water system discovered by Charles Warren.
  • Descend to the Large Stone Structure — Go below the metal staircase near the ticket office to see ruins claimed to be part of King David's palace, a site that sparks both historical fascination and lively debate.
  • Walk down the Mount of Olives — Take a bus or taxi to the top and follow the path down past ancient tombs and churches. The route offers stunning views and follows the Palm Sunday path tradition says Jesus took.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Start at the top of hills — To avoid a steep uphill climb, especially on the Mount of Olives, take a bus or taxi to the summit and plan your route downhill. Bus 84 from Ammunition Hill is a good option.
  • Prepare for Hezekiah's Tunnel — If you plan to walk the wet tunnel, bring a flashlight and shoes that can get soaked. You will be wading in water up to your thighs.
  • Use local transport for distant sites — While walking is best near the Old City, use the light rail or intercity buses from the main stations near Damascus Gate to reach places like Ammunition Hill or more distant neighborhoods.
  • Secure your valuables — Be extremely vigilant against pickpockets at crowded viewpoints on the Mount of Olives. Stow valuables safely and be wary of strangers engaging you in conversation or trying to sell you something.
