About this place

Last updated Aug 2, 2026

Durrës is Albania’s principal port city and second-largest urban center, sitting on a curved Adriatic bay about 33 km west of Tirana. Its waterfront combines a working harbor with a long sandy coastline that has drawn beachgoers for generations, making it one of the country’s busiest summer destinations.

The city wears its layers of history openly — a Roman amphitheater sits in the middle of town, Byzantine fortifications run along the old walls, and Italian-era architecture lines the main streets. Today Durrës balances that deep past with a lively, modern rhythm of seafront cafés, promenades, and ferry departures to Italy.
