Durg is a major city in Chhattisgarh, situated along the east bank of the Shivnath River on the central Indian plain. Historically part of the ancient Kosala kingdom, the city’s name comes from the Hindi word for fort, reflecting its past as a Maratha stronghold. Today it serves as an agricultural hub and sits near the massive Bhilai steel plant to the east, giving it a blend of historical depth and industrial significance.

  • Arrive by train — Durg Junction sits on a key east–west rail corridor, with frequent connections from Raipur and major cities like Mumbai and Kolkata.
  • Nearest airport — Mana Airport in Raipur is about 54 km away; plan for a road transfer of roughly an hour.
  • Pack for the season — lightweight cottons and sun protection are essential for much of the year; bring rain gear for monsoon visits and a light jacket for winter evenings.
  • Use Durg as a base — the city connects reasonably well by bus to Nagpur, Jashpur, and Bilaspur for wider regional exploration.
