About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Duisburg is a city shaped by water, trade, and heavy industry in the western Ruhr region of North Rhine-Westphalia. With nearly 500,000 residents, it is one of Germany's larger cities and a major logistics hub thanks to Europe's biggest inland harbour at the confluence of the Rhine and Ruhr rivers. Once a medieval marketplace on the ancient Hellweg trade route, it later became the adopted home of cartographer Gerardus Mercator, who lived and worked here for 40 years.

Modern Duisburg is known for its steel production—the city’s seven blast furnaces produce the majority of Germany’s pig iron—but the economy has successfully diversified into services and logistics. The vibrant Innenhafen (inner harbour) has been transformed from an industrial plot into a waterfront district with museums, restaurants, and nightlife, showing a city that is continually reinventing itself.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Innenhafen dining and nightlife — The gentrified inner harbour is the go-to district for Spanish, Italian, Asian, and German restaurants, plus cocktail bars and pubs with direct river views.
  • Sample local beer culture — Try a fresh König Pilsener (KöPi), one of Germany's best-selling mainstream beers, or visit small breweries like Webster Brauhaus and Brauhaus Urfels that brew their own on-site.
  • Relax in waterfront cafés and bars — Choose from the Mississippi Queen cocktail bar, Diebels im Hafen for Altbier, or the König Pilsener Wirtshaus Duisburg, all overlooking the water.

  • Late spring through early autumn (mid-May to late September) — The most favorable weather window, with average temperatures around 17.7°C and very little rainfall.
  • Summer evenings by the harbour — The extended daylight and mild conditions make the inner harbour's terrace restaurants and bars particularly enjoyable from June through August.
  • Shoulder season visits — Late May and September offer pleasant weather and lighter crowds before and after peak European summer travel.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Book high-speed train tickets early — Advance Deutsche Bahn fares from Frankfurt Airport can drop as low as €29. Rail&Fly offers are available for many airlines serving Frankfurt.
  • Obtain an environmental sticker for driving — Most of Duisburg is within the Umweltzone low-emission zone. Rental cars come equipped, but drivers of foreign-registered vehicles must ensure they have a valid green sticker.
  • Use the VRR local transit network — Frequent regional trains connect Duisburg to Essen in 10–15 minutes and Düsseldorf in about 15 minutes, making day trips very practical.
  • Buy transit tickets via app or machine — Single rides and bike supplements can also be purchased from bus drivers, but the full range of tickets is easiest to get digitally or at the customer service centre.
