About this place
Dresden, the capital of Saxony, is often called Elbflorenz — "Florence on the Elbe" — a nod to its graceful setting on the river and its legacy as a center for art and architecture. Its Golden Age arrived in the 18th century under Augustus the Strong, whose patronage filled the city with Baroque and Rococo treasures. Much of the historic core was devastated by bombing in 1945, but landmark buildings like the Frauenkirche, the Semperoper, and the Zwinger have since been meticulously rebuilt, restoring the skyline's distinctive silhouette.
