About this place

Last updated Jun 10, 2026

Dongguan (东莞) is a major manufacturing hub in the Pearl River Delta region of China, about 100 km from Hong Kong. It's estimated to produce roughly one-fifth of the world's smartphones and one-tenth of its shoes. While not a classic tourist destination, Dongguan offers a handful of fascinating Qing Dynasty historic sites, especially related to the Opium Wars in Humen Town, alongside typical big-city amenities, excellent shopping, and some nice hiking trails.

Dongguan is a sprawling prefecture-level city that directly administers 28 towns outside its central urban districts. This means "Dongguan" colloquially refers to just the center, but officially covers a much larger area including manufacturing towns like Chang'an, Changping, Houjie, and Humen — each with its own character and attractions. It's well connected to Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong by air, rail, and bus.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 10, 2026
  • Fly into Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport or Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport — both are about an hour from central Dongguan by car or shuttle bus.
  • From Hong Kong, buses depart regularly from the airport and hotels; alternatively, take a direct ferry from HKIA's Skypier to Humen Town to bypass border queues.
  • For getting around, use ride-hailing apps rather than taxis, which are becoming rare. Licensed taxis are blue or yellow.
  • Dongguan Rail Transit (metro) Line 2 connects Dongguan Railway Station to Humen Railway Station; Line 1 opened in 2025.
  • English is not widely spoken — carry a translation app or phrasebook for restaurants and bus travel.
  • Stay alert in nightlife areas; avoid accepting drinks from strangers and be cautious of overly friendly locals.
