About this place
Djibouti city serves as the capital and primary port of the Republic of Djibouti. Founded in 1888, this harbourside capital is the country's economic heart, with much of its activity centered around the busy port. The city also features some beaches along its eastern shore.
With a population of around 400,000, it acts as a gateway between the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa. Travelers can arrive overland via a modern passenger train from Addis Ababa, a comfortable journey that includes a dining car and takes roughly 12 hours on an every-other-day schedule.
