About this place

Diyarbakır, known as Amed in Kurdish, is the largest city in southeastern Turkey and is considered by many to be the cultural capital of the Kurdish people. Perched on the banks of the Tigris River, one of the great rivers of the Middle East, the city boasts a history that stretches back thousands of years. Earliest references come from Assyrian records around 1300 BC, when it was the capital of the Aramean kingdom of Bit-Zamani. The Romans conquered and renamed it Amida, building the formidable city walls that still encircle the old quarter. After the Romans came the Persians and then the Muslim Arabs, who gave the city its current name.

The old city, enclosed within magnificent basalt walls, is a fascinating blend of ancient mosques, churches, and everyday Kurdish life. The Diyarbakır fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the city offers a unique, off-the-beaten-path experience that contrasts sharply with the more touristed areas of Turkey. While the old city has a rough, village-like charm, a modern and vibrant new city has developed nearby, offering a different side of Diyarbakır life.

  • Catch a football match at Diyarbakır Stadium (capacity 33,000) to see Amed SFK, which plays in the Süper Lig.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 11, 2026
  • Carry your original passport at all times due to frequent police checkpoints in the old quarter.
  • Dress modestly, especially in the old city, to avoid unwanted attention.
  • Check that your hotel has air conditioning if traveling in summer.
  • The main bus station (otogar) is about 5 km from the city center — a taxi to the old quarter costs around 100 TL (as of Sep 2022).
  • Be prepared for ID checks at military checkpoints when traveling westwards by bus or car.
  • Tourists are still rare here compared to Mardin (1 hour away), so enjoy having the city mostly to yourself.
