About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Dire Dawa, meaning "Place of Remedy," is eastern Ethiopia's second-largest city and a vibrant crossroads of Afar, Oromo, and Somali cultures. Founded in 1902 as a rail hub for the Addis Ababa–Djibouti Railway, it grew where Harar's elevation made rail access impractical. Today the chartered city holds about 440,000 residents, with the city proper home to roughly 277,000.

Set on the Dechatu River beneath a ring of cliffs, the city serves as a busy industrial and market center. Its markets overflow with traditional spices, incense, and tropical fruits, while the French-built railway station preserves a distinct 19th-century atmosphere amidst the modern bustle.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Kulubi religious ceremony — Held twice yearly in July and December, this mass gathering in nearby Kulubi (about one hour by minibus) features small stalls selling clothes, sugar cane, and local goods. Note that hotel prices in Dire Dawa can double or triple during the three-day event.
  • Experience a khat session — In the afternoon, many residents gather in circles to chew khat leaves with coffee. Visitors can join for a culturally immersive, mildly narcotic experience. Conversations can be lively, but avoid political topics, particularly anything concerning Ethiopian Somalis or Somali refugees.
  • Explore the river basin — The Dechatu River Basin offers striking sunrise and sunset views, especially rewarding in the early morning or at dusk when light fills the cliff-ringed riverbed.

  • February to mid-March — Comfortable temperatures averaging 23°C, minimal rainfall (1.2 mm), and abundant sunshine make this an excellent window for exploring the city and nearby Harar.
  • Mid-May to mid-July — Warm conditions with average temperatures around 25.5°C and very low precipitation (1.8 mm) offer another favorable period, though this window overlaps with the July Kulubi ceremony when hotels fill quickly.
  • Avoid festival surges unless attending — If you're not attending the Kulubi religious gathering in July or December, steer clear of those periods to avoid inflated hotel rates and heavy demand.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Getting around — Blue-and-white minibuses and blue bajaji (auto rickshaws) are plentiful and easy to hail. If you contract a taxi, allow an extra hour or two for the driver's arrival.
  • Train from Addis Ababa — The modern railway (inaugurated in 2018) reaches Dire Dawa in about 11 hours, with sleeper cabins available on the night train. Bring your own food and water as station shops are absent and the train restaurant may run out en route.
  • Safety basics — The city is generally safe, but keep backpacks, cameras, and valuables secure to avoid pickpockets and con artists. Avoid political discussions, particularly around Somalia, and be aware of a visible police presence.
  • Cash access — ATMs are available at Dashen Bank and Ogaden Bank in the city center.
