About this place

Last updated Aug 22, 2026

Dijon is the capital of Burgundy’s Côte-d’Or department and a city where Gothic grandeur meets cosmopolitan energy. Once the seat of the powerful Dukes of Burgundy, its largely intact historic center is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site honoring the climats and terroirs of Burgundy’s wine region. Traffic restrictions keep the core quiet and walkable, while universities and cultural venues bring a lively, modern rhythm.

Food and wine are woven into daily life here. The city is the birthplace of gingerbread, parsleyed ham terrine, and the kir cocktail, and its surrounding vineyards produce some of the world’s most celebrated chardonnays and pinot noirs. With 23 Michelin-starred restaurants and an International City of Gastronomy and Wine, Dijon rewards travelers who arrive with an appetite.

Things to Do

Last updated Aug 22, 2026
  • Follow the Parcours de la Chouette — The self-guided Owl’s Trail uses brass owl markers set into the pavement to lead you past 22 historic stops. Pick up the map at the tourist office or download the app, then learn about the city’s art, architecture, and legends at your own pace.
  • Walk or cycle the Promenade de l’Ouche — This green corridor starts near the Cité internationale de la gastronomie et du vin and follows the Ouche River upstream. In about 30 minutes on foot you’ll reach the Well of Moses, with the path continuing to Kir Lake.
  • Spend a sunny afternoon at Lac Kir — The artificial lake offers a small beach, swimming, and a popular loop trail for walking or cycling. Summer days draw locals for picnics and casual waterside lounging.
  • Sample Burgundy’s food scene — Order a prix-fixe menu to taste local classics like coq au vin, jambon persillé, and pain d’épices. For a pre-dinner drink, try a traditional kir (cassis and Aligoté white wine) or its bubbly cousin, the kir royale.
  • Catch a football match — Dijon FCO plays in Ligue 2 at Stade Gaston Gérard, located a short walk east of the train station.

  • Palais des Ducs — The former palace of the Dukes of Burgundy anchors the historic center. Climb the 316 steps of the Philippe Le Bon tower for a sweeping rooftop view, limited to 19 visitors at a time for security.
  • Jardin de l’Arquebuse — This 18th-century garden houses botanic collections, a natural-history museum, a planetarium, and the Pavillon de Raines. It’s a peaceful green pocket just below the train station.
  • Parc de la Colombière — A 33-hectare formal park classified as a historical monument, linked to the city center by a long, lime-tree-lined promenade that was once called the most beautiful avenue in the kingdom.
  • St. Michel Church — East of the palace, this striking church was built between the 15th and 17th centuries and is part of the city’s “hundred bell towers” skyline noted by King François I.
  • Jardin Darcy — A leafy square near the station with the famous white bear statue by François Pompon (a replica; the original is in the Musée d’Orsay). It’s a pleasant spot to rest and people-watch.

Planning Tips

Last updated Aug 22, 2026
  • Pick up the free downtown map — Tourist offices at the train station and behind the Palais des Ducs provide maps that include a guide for the self-guided Owl’s Trail walking tour.
  • Leave the car in a park-and-ride — The city center is mostly pedestrianized. Park at a P+R lot near the tram or bus lines and use public transport, unless you’re visiting outlying sites like the Well of Moses where driving is more practical.
  • Divia public transport is affordable — A one-hour bus and tram ticket costs €1.40, while 24-hour, 48-hour, and 72-hour passes offer savings for longer stays. A free city shuttle also links many downtown spots.
  • Book TGV tickets early for the best fares — TGV prices vary, but TER regional trains offer fixed rates: around €36 for adults between Paris and Dijon.
  • Kir cocktails are a Dijon essential — Order a kir (cassis and white wine) or a kir royale (with champagne) as a pre-dinner aperitif to start a meal like a true Burgundian.
