About this place
Dahuk (also spelled Duhok or Dohuk) is the capital of Duhok Governorate in Iraqi Kurdistan, a Kurdish city of roughly 250,000 residents encircled by mountains along the Tigris River. The population is composed mostly of Kurds and Assyrians.
While it offers fewer classic sights than some larger destinations, the city has grown more tourist-friendly and provides a genuine look at daily life in the region. A compact central bazaar, nearby waterfalls, and a handful of local attractions give visitors a manageable itinerary, and its reputation as one of Iraq’s safer stops makes it a practical base for exploring the Kurdish north.

Planning Tips
- Carry identification — police or military may ask for your ID; this is standard procedure, not a scam, and no money will be demanded.
- Negotiate hotel rates — low tourism means prices are often flexible, especially for multi-night stays.
- Stick to bottled water — tap water is not recommended; sealed bottles are cheap and widely available.
- Use shared taxis and buses — taxis within the city run around 3,000 dinars, and buses connect to nearby towns like Zakho.
- Respect local curiosity — staring is usually friendly or curious rather than hostile; Dahuk residents are accustomed to a small Western presence.
