About this place
São Paulo's Far South is the city's largest and greenest region, a sprawling expanse where forests, farms, and the massive Guarapiranga and Billings reservoirs dominate the landscape. It offers a completely different urban experience, with opportunities for nautical sports, ecotourism, and exploring the preserved rainforest known as the Amazônia Paulistana. The area is historically rooted in the former municipality of Santo Amaro and was shaped by 19th-century German and 20th-century Japanese immigration, whose cultural marks are still visible today.
The region contrasts sharply with São Paulo's wealthy center, being a predominantly working-class area formed by rapid, often chaotic, growth. While social challenges and pockets of extreme poverty exist, significant efforts are turning reservoir shores into public parks. For a visitor, the Far South is a destination for nature, adventure, and cultural discovery beyond the typical urban metropolis.
