About this place
Depok is a bustling city in West Java, Indonesia, lying just south of Jakarta within the massive Jabodetabek metropolitan area. Home to nearly 2 million people, it is perhaps best known as the location of the University of Indonesia, one of the country's most prestigious universities. Depok offers a mix of suburban energy, student life, and local culture, with easy access to Jakarta and Bogor via train and toll roads.
The city's roots trace back to the colonial era, when it was founded as a Christian congregation named "DEPOC" (De Eerste Protestante Organisatie van Christenen) by Cornelis Chastelein. Today, the area known as Old Depok preserves colonial-era homes and is inhabited by descendants of freed slaves known as Belanda Depok, reflecting a unique local heritage.
While not a primary tourist destination, Depok appeals to travelers seeking an affordable base near Jakarta, a taste of everyday Indonesian city life, or a relaxed weekend atmosphere with parks, student cafes, and street food. The University of Indonesia campus provides a green escape for walking and jogging.

Planning Tips
- Use the commuter rail (red or yellow line) from Jakarta to avoid traffic — travel time is 25–70 minutes and tickets cost around Rp.3,000.
- For long-distance travel, head to Gambir or Pasar Senen stations in Central Jakarta, as Depok's stations only serve commuter trains.
- To get around within Depok, use ride-hailing apps (Grab or Gojek) for convenience, or hop on an angkot minibus — ask locals for the correct route.
- Negotiate prices when buying durian from roadside sellers; you can taste a sample before committing to purchase.
- Consider staying at the Margonda Residence Apartments (studio from Rp.1,350,000 per month, minimum 3-month contract) for longer visits near the university.
