About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Pétion-Ville is an affluent hillside suburb southeast of Port-au-Prince, known as a primary hub for tourism, dining, and nightlife in Haiti. The district is a striking contrast to the capital's center, offering a more stable environment where business and leisure operate with a familiar, western sense of normalcy. Named after a founding father of the country, it is a favored residential area for diplomats, foreign businesspeople, and wealthy locals.

While the town center is modern and secure, unregulated growth on its outer edges has led to the formation of shantytowns. Despite this, Pétion-Ville remains the focal point for visitors seeking restaurants, art galleries, and after-dark entertainment in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Use taxis during daylight — fares are typically around G500, but prices rise significantly and safety risks increase after dark.
  • Drink bottled water only — stick to sealed bottled water and try local drinks like Crémas or Rhum Barbancourt.
  • Fly into Port-au-Prince airport — a taxi from the airport to your destination will likely cost between US$15–20; be prepared to bargain.
  • Handle banking early — note that banks in Pétion-Ville close very early, even on weekdays.
  • Tap-taps are an option, but be cautious — shared pickup trucks and buses are very cheap but can be intimidating and are described as potentially dangerous.
