About this place

Last updated Jun 13, 2026

Dazhou (达州; Dázhōu) anchors the eastern edge of the Sichuan Basin, where the fertile plains give way to the rolling Daba Mountains. Once known as Tongzhou, the prefecture carries more than 2,300 years of recorded history and rests on archaeological sites linked to the ancient Ba culture along the upper Yangtze River. Today it is a bustling regional center of over five million residents.

Travelers come here for the rugged mountain landscapes, river gorges, and a glimpse of Sichuan life away from the better-known tourist corridors. The city itself is compact and walkable, while the surrounding countryside offers dramatic topography that rewards explorers willing to venture beyond the urban core.

  • Highway G65 and G5012 expressways connect Dazhou to Chengdu, Chongqing, and Shaanxi, with long-distance buses also serving Nanchong, Bazhong, and Xi’an.
  • Rail access includes the Xiangyu line from Chongqing and Xiangyang, plus the Dazhou–Chengdu railway for direct connections to the provincial capital.
  • City buses cost ¥1–2, run from roughly 6:30 AM to 9:00 PM, and accept Alipay, WeChat Pay, or local transport cards for payment.
  • Plan local sightseeing independently and confirm attraction access ahead of time, as published visitor information is limited.
  • Allow extra travel time if your visit overlaps with Chinese New Year or National Day, when road and public transport congestion peaks.
