About this place

Davao is the largest city on the Philippines' second-largest island, Mindanao. It has a huge land area, and the inhabitants like to think of it as one of the most crime-free large cities in the Philippines. The city is renowned for its durian and pomelo – the durian is an acquired taste, but those who like it swear the smell is worth it, while pomelo is a citrus fruit similar to a grapefruit.

Modern Davao began as the Spanish colonial outpost of Nueva Vergara in 1848, later renamed to reflect its Bagobo roots. Since the American arrival in 1900, Davao became prosperous through agriculture and homesteading. The city was heavily bombed during World War II, and much of it was destroyed. From the late 1960s through the mid-1980s, Davao experienced social and political unrest, but crime rates dropped significantly after Rodrigo Duterte became mayor in 1988.

As in most of Mindanao, Cebuano (known locally as Davao Bisaya) is the main local language. English and Tagalog are also widely used and understood, making it accessible for international travelers.
