About this place

Last updated Jun 10, 2026

Dar es Salaam, whose name means "Haven of Peace" in Arabic, is Tanzania's largest city and one of East Africa's most important ports and trading centers. Founded in 1862 on the site of the fishing village of Mzizima, the city is a lively blend of African, Muslim, and South Asian influences, offering visitors a rich cultural tapestry. While it may not top the list of destinations for most travelers to Tanzania—often a stopover en route to Zanzibar or the northern safari circuit—Dar es Salaam has its own distinct character and charm.

The city stretches along the Indian Ocean coast, offering a flat, sprawling landscape with a picturesque harbor, markets full of energy, and pockets of fascinating history. Walking the city center is a great way to get a feel for local life, and the surrounding islands and nearby historical sites like Bagamoyo provide excellent day-trip opportunities. Though it lost its status as the official capital to Dodoma in 1973, Dar es Salaam remains Tanzania's undisputed financial and political hub, pulsing with life and possibility.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 10, 2026
  • Use ride-hailing apps like Uber and Bolt from the airport for a safer, more affordable ride into the city rather than hailing a random taxi.
  • Book domestic flights with cash at airline offices to avoid credit card surcharges of 3–6%.
  • Keep valuables out of sight and secure bags with zippers or anti-theft features, especially in crowded markets and on daladalas.
  • Consider staying at the YWCA or YMCA for budget-friendly accommodation in the city center — both are popular with backpackers but fill up quickly.
  • If visiting during the rainy season (March–May), pack a waterproof jacket and plan indoor or cultural activities as backups.
