About this place
Tamsui (also known as Danshui) sits at the mouth of the Tamsui River where it meets the Taiwan Strait, a waterfront district of New Taipei that once served as northern Taiwan’s main shipping port. Its 19th-century trading heyday left a legacy of historic forts, colonial architecture, and temple lanes, while the silting of the river shifted commercial traffic to Keelung and gave Tamsui a quieter, nostalgic charm. Today it’s a favorite escape from Taipei — just a short MRT ride away — where visitors come to stroll the riverside promenade, snack on street food, and watch famously beautiful sunsets over the water.
