About this place

Last updated Jun 11, 2026

Dakar is the capital and largest city of Senegal, perched on the Cap Vert peninsula — the westernmost point of mainland Africa. With a metropolitan population of around 4 million, it serves as the cultural and commercial heart of French-speaking West Africa. The city's blend of historic neighborhoods, lively music scenes, and coastal setting draws both leisure and business travelers, helped by strong flight connections to Europe and other parts of Africa.

Dakar's roots stretch back to Lebou fishing villages and later Portuguese, Dutch, and French colonial settlements, including the infamous slave-trade hub of Gorée Island. Today, the city is known for its warmth — locals take pride in the concept of teranga (hospitality) — though visitors should stay alert to the common petty crime found in any large urban center.

The city enjoys a warm, humid tropical climate with a distinct rainy season from July to October. A growing rapid-transit network (the TER train and Sunu BRT bus) makes getting around easier, while taxis and cars rapides (minibuses) fill in the gaps. First-time visitors often base themselves in the city center for access to markets, restaurants, and historic sites.

Things to Do

Last updated Jun 11, 2026
  • Catch live music at venues like Club Thiossane and Just 4 U — Dakar's vibrant music scene is a major draw for world-music fans.
  • Shop for fabric at Marché HLM, a less hectic alternative to Sandaga market, offering a huge selection of textiles perfect for custom-made traditional Senegalese clothing.
  • Relax on one of the city's beaches, but avoid visiting after dark for safety reasons.
  • Sample roasted peanuts sold on the street or served alongside beer at bars — a local favorite with just the right salt and warmth.
  • Enjoy Dakar's lively bar and nightlife scene; try the local favorite beer, Gazelle, or the stronger Flag beer.
  • Visit during the Contemporary Art Biennale (Dak'art) if your trip coincides with this internationally recognized arts event.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 11, 2026
  • Negotiate taxi fares before getting in, and insist on using the toll motorway from the airport — it saves time and is safer at night.
  • The Dakar Dem Dikk bus runs between the airport and the AIBD Dem Dikk station for about CFA 6,000 (Dec 2024), after which you can take a cheaper taxi to your destination.
  • For ferry travel to Ziguinchor, book cabins well in advance during tourist season; tickets cannot be reserved online (as of Dec 2024), so arrange through your hotel or a third party.
  • Learn a few phrases in Wolof, such as "ba beneen yoon" (next time) to politely decline persistent beggars or hawkers.
  • Use ride-hailing apps Heetch or Yango for transparent pricing instead of negotiating with street taxis.
  • Avoid changing money at the airport — con artists operate in that area. Use an ATM or exchange in the city center instead.
  • Women should avoid walking alone after dark, and everyone should avoid the beaches and certain stretches of the Corniche at night.
