About this place
Daejeon is South Korea's fifth-largest city, a dynamic hub of science, education, and transit located at the nation's crossroads. Often called the Silicon Valley of Korea, it is home to the sprawling Daedeok Innopolis, which hosts over 200 research institutes including facilities for Samsung and LG, as well as KAIST and Chungnam National University.
Beyond its high-tech credentials, Daejeon unfolds across valleys carved by the Gapcheon, Yudeungcheon, and Daejeoncheon streams. The modern central business district of Dunsan buzzes with shops and restaurants, while Yuseong-gu to the northwest is known for its hot springs resort atmosphere. The original city center in Jung-gu, anchored around the main train station, offers a more traditional market scene and an artsy vibe near Jungangno.
Nature is readily accessible. Gyeryongsan National Park sits on the western edge of the city, and several forested mountains—Sikjangsan, Bomunsan, Gubongsan, Jangtaesan, and Gyejoksan—provide a network of hiking trails with fortress ruins and scenic gazebos. For urban green space, Expo Park and the Hanbat Arboretum offer riverside strolls in the heart of the city.
