About this place
Daegu (대구, 大邱), officially the Daegu Metropolitan City, is South Korea's fourth-largest city and the third-largest metropolitan area, with over 2.5 million residents. Located in southeastern Korea about 80 km from the coast, it sits in a wide, flat rectangular valley near the Geumho and Nakdong Rivers. Historically, the fertile land around these rivers has supported settlement since the Paleolithic era. During the Joseon Dynasty, Daegu served as the administrative and commercial capital of the Gyeongsang-do region, and today it remains a major hub for commerce, culture, and transportation. The city administers itself and is mostly surrounded by North Gyeongsang Province; together, Daegu and the province are referred to as Daegu-Gyeongbuk, with a combined population of over 5 million.
Modern Daegu blends deep history with a dynamic urban energy. It played a notable role in Korea's independence and democracy movements, and has since evolved into a major international city. Visitors will find a mix of traditional markets, contemporary shopping districts, and a lively food scene built around local specialties. The city's motto, "Colorful Daegu," reflects its diverse festivals, cultural events, and year-round attractions. From its historic temples and parks to its passionate baseball and football culture, Daegu offers travelers a genuine slice of Korean life beyond the capital.

Things to Do
- Sample the local specialty Daegu Jjimgalbi: beef ribs cooked in an aluminum pot with spicy red pepper powder and chopped garlic — a tongue-tingling dish distinct from the soy-based versions found elsewhere in Korea.
- Try Daegu Ttarogukbap, a unique local meal where rice and soup are served separately (unlike most of Korea). Made with beef shank, leek, and radish in a spicy broth, it's a fifty-year tradition exclusive to Daegu.
- Enjoy Makchang (grilled pork or beef intestines), a dish that originated in Daegu and is now a beloved specialty available at restaurants across the city.
- Visit Seomun Market or Gyodong Market to sample Daegu Kkultteok — glutinous rice cakes that appear coated in honey thanks to melted brown sugar.
- Explore Daegu's nightlife around the main universities (Kyungpook, Keimyung) and the downtown Banwoldang area, which has the greatest concentration of foreign restaurants, pubs, coffee shops, and cafes.
- Catch a baseball game at Daegu Samsung Lions Park (home of the Samsung Lions) or a football match at DGB Daegu Bank Park (home of Daegu FC).

Planning Tips
- Daegu has two main train stations: Dongdaegu (East Daegu) and Daegu station, both connected by Subway Line 1. KTX high-speed trains serve the city.
- The city bus system uses a numbering scheme where the first digit indicates the geographical zone. Rapid buses (급행) and express buses (직행) connect major hubs quickly.
- Subway lines operate from approximately 05:30 to 23:30. Stops are announced in Korean and English. Keep your token after scanning it at entry — you'll need it to exit.
- Transfers between city buses, urban railroads, and buses in neighboring cities (Yeongcheon, Gyeongsan) are free within 30 minutes of getting off.
- For directions to taxi drivers, use a nearby landmark (department store, hotel, movie theater) rather than street addresses, which are not commonly used in Daegu.
- The City Tour Bus departs from Daegu Tourist Information Center, Dongdaegu Train Station, and Banwoldang, running 5 times daily with adult fares around ₩5,000.
- Tap water is safe, but newcomers with sensitive stomachs should be cautious with street food and the spice levels of local dishes.
