About this place
Cumaná, the capital of Sucre state, holds the distinction of being one of the oldest continuously inhabited European settlements in South America. Founded in 1515, this coastal city has a layered history shaped by Spanish conquistadors, the indigenous Cumanagoto people, and notable figures like Antonio José de Sucre and Alexander von Humboldt.
Today, Cumaná is recognized for its large tuna industry and its strategic position across an inlet from the Araya Peninsula. It serves as a convenient gateway to the highly prized coastal scenery and islands of Mochima National Park.
