About this place
Cuautla is a mid-sized city in the state of Morelos, home to around 157,000 residents. With more than a millennium of history, it has been shaped by Otomi, Aztec, Spanish, and Revolutionary influences, leaving behind a collection of monuments and stories that reward curious travelers.
The city played a strategic role in both the Mexican War of Independence and the Mexican Revolution. It is the site of Morelos' 72-day siege—where young Narciso Mendoza became a folk hero—and the final resting place of Emiliano Zapata, whose troops defeated federal forces here in 1911.

Planning Tips
- Research your bus line in advance — with no centralized terminal, know which carrier and station you need before arriving to avoid scrambling among scattered stops.
- Look for local specialties — seek out tacos acorazados with sliced hard-boiled egg and chito (mature-goat barbacoa) served on blue corn tortillas; these are rarely found outside Cuautla.
- Dress for warm days and cool nights — pack light, breathable clothing for the heat, but bring a sweater or jacket for evenings when lows can dip to around 6.1°C.
- Craft shopping — budget time to hunt for handmade huaraches, wire birdcages from Tetelcingo, and traditional garments like the chincuete.
