About this place
Cotia sits about 30 km west of São Paulo and is home to roughly 230,000 residents. The city stretches across 324 km² and blends a busy commercial core with quieter residential pockets, especially the well-to-do Granja Viana district. Many people have moved here looking for more space and a break from big-city intensity, which has shaped a community with plenty of shops, restaurants, and both large and small shopping centers.
The municipality is split into three main areas: Granja Viana, the Centro (downtown), and the sprawling Caucaia do Alto. Each has its own rhythm — from the leafy condominium-lined streets of Granja Viana to the more traditional center and the forested stretches of Caucaia do Alto.

Things to See
- Granja Viana district — the first Cotia district you encounter coming from São Paulo. Once a collection of large farms, it's now filled with middle- and upper-class condos, restaurants, shopping centers, and parks, attracting people seeking relief from the capital's congestion.
- Praça Japonesa (Japanese Square) — a Japanese-inspired square along Rodovia Raposo Tavares at km 31, honoring the Japanese immigrants who introduced rural techniques to the region.
- Caucaia do Alto and Reserva do Morro Grande — the largest and most far-flung district, accessed via secondary roads before Vargem Grande Paulista. It holds the Reserva do Morro Grande, a substantial preserved area of Atlantic Forest ideal for nature-minded visits.

Best Time to Visit
- April to mid‑May — a travel window with mild average temperatures around 19.1°C, low daily rainfall of about 1.6 mm, and generous sunshine near 34008.1 sec.
- Avoid rush‑hour arrival by car — regardless of season, the Raposo Tavares highway is constantly congested during peak commuting times, so pick mid‑day or weekend windows for smoother drives.

Planning Tips
- Getting there by bus — daily interurban buses to Cotia depart from the Pinheiros district in São Paulo.
- Getting there by car — Rodovia Raposo Tavares (SP‑270) is the main artery. You can also use the Castello Branco or Régis Bittencourt highways, but you'll need to take the Rodoanel and eventually merge onto Raposo Tavares.
- Getting around town — the center is walkable, but Granja Viana and Caucaia do Alto are more spread out. A car is helpful for a complete visit, since bus lines in outlying areas are sparse and mostly interurban.
- Phone tips — public phone booths use phonecards (sold at newspaper stands). Local calls within city code (11) use the format +55(11)0000‑0000; drop the +55(11) prefix for local dialing. Since 2012, cellphone numbers in the 11 code area start with a 9 before the eight-digit number.
