About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Çorum is a workaday Central Karadeniz city of about 270,000 people that makes a practical break on the long drive from Ankara to the Black Sea coast. Its economy has long revolved around agriculture and traditional crafts — copper-working, tanning, and hand-weaving — and today the city also produces cement, automobile components, and IT parts. Most of the architecture is modern, a result of its position near the North Anatolian fault line and the earthquakes that have reshaped it over the centuries.

For the traveler, Çorum offers a compact, walkable center anchored by its 19th-century clock tower and a few historic mosques and hans. It's not a major tourist destination, but its local snacks, a lively football scene, and a handful of low-key sights reward anyone who decides to pause here overnight.

  • Catch a Süper Lig match — Çorum FK play top-tier Turkish football at City Stadium (capacity 15,000), right across from the bus station.
  • Sample leblebi — roast chickpeas are the local snack specialty; pick up a bag from shops around the clock tower.
  • Work out at a fitness center — several gyms operate in town, including Synergym inside the AHL shopping center next to Anitta Hotel.

Things to See

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Clock Tower (Saat Kulesi) — the 1894 minaret-like tower marks the city center and is the natural orientation point.
  • Velipaşa Han — a restored late-19th-century inn beside the clock tower, now housing craft shops and cafes.
  • Murad-i Rabi Mosque (Ulu Cami) — the Grand Mosque just north of the tower dates in its current form from 1810, after earthquakes destroyed earlier versions.
  • New mosque west of center — a large, traditionally styled mosque built in 2008 about 1 km from downtown.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Bus connections — Metro Turizm and Flix Bus run frequent services from Istanbul (about 10 hours) and Ankara, continuing on to Samsun.
  • Airport options — the closest airport is Samsun, but Ankara has many more flights plus high-speed trains.
  • Getting into town — dolmuşes leave from the south wing of the otogar; check if your intercity bus ticket includes a free transfer.
  • Staying connected — 4G coverage is reliable in Çorum and on the approach highways; 5G has not yet rolled out in Turkey as of late 2024.
  • Eating — local restaurants cluster around the clock tower and near the museum southwest of the center; try a tandır kebab while you're in town.
