About this place
Coquimbo sits on a triangular peninsula in northern Chile, where a protected bay shelters an active industrial and fishing port. The older city stretches along a narrow strip of land just above sea level, creating a compact urban core surrounded by water. By day it can feel like a working port town, but the English Quarter comes alive after dark with a growing nightlife scene.
The real draw, however, lies in the string of beaches and bays that fringe the coast. Soft-sand resorts like La Herradura, Totoralillo, and Tongoy offer sun, crystalline warm waters, and spa services that make the region a popular seaside escape.

Planning Tips
- Mornings by the coast — plan outdoor activities for midday and afternoon; early fog and drizzle are common even in summer.
- Shopping on Aldunate — retail stores, malls, and the Arauco Premium Outlet are concentrated along Aldunate and Avenida La Cantera.
- Beach hopping — the best sand and swimming are found in the outlying resorts like Totoralillo and Tongoy rather than the city waterfront.
