About this place
Cochabamba, affectionately called the "City of Eternal Spring," rests in a fertile Andean valley in central Bolivia. As the country's fourth largest city, it combines a rich pre-Inca and colonial past with a vibrant modern culture. Known historically as an agricultural heartland that supplied maize to the Inca and later fed surrounding mining communities, today it claims a reputation as a culinary capital where traditional Bolivian flavors are celebrated.
The city's layout centers on the bustling Plaza 14 de Septiembre, with the tree-lined El Prado boulevard leading north to neighborhoods that grow increasingly affluent. Avenida de las Heroinas forms the main east-west artery, while the sprawling La Cancha market dominates the south. Beyond the urban center, the surrounding valley offers outdoor adventures, from paragliding to exploring cloud-shrouded national parks.

Things to Do
- Paragliding — Cochabamba is Bolivia's paragliding capital. Several local agencies offer tandem flights and beginner courses, with some of the most affordable rates on the continent.
- Cable car ride — Take the teleférico up the hillside for sweeping views of the valley and city. This is a safer alternative to hiking the stair paths, especially around dusk.
- Bienal de Arte Urbano (BAU) — Every two years, this week-long festival in late April or early May transforms the city with murals, graffiti, and contemporary urban art focused on social action. The next edition is in 2027.
- Carrasco National Park — A day or overnight excursion into cloud-shrouded mountains, featuring jungle landscapes, rushing streams, and abundant bird and plant life.
- Football match — Catch a first-division game featuring local clubs Jorge Wilstermann or Aurora. Matches are usually on Sunday afternoons with tickets readily available at the stadium.
- Explore the valley towns — Take a day trip to nearby Quillacollo, Tarata, or Punata. Punata is particularly known for its traditional chicha, a fermented corn-based beverage.

- Late July to mid-October — A sweet spot within the dry season; average highs reach a comfortable 28°C with almost no precipitation, making it ideal for outdoor activities like paragliding and national park visits.
- Bienal de Arte Urbano (late April/early May on odd years) — If you're interested in urban art, plan around this festival in 2027; the weather is still quite dry before the wet season intensifies.
- Avoid peak wet months (January–February) — While rarely extreme, these months see the most rainfall, which can complicate road travel and outdoor excursions.

Planning Tips
- Radio taxis are essential at night — Have your hotel or restaurant call a taxi with a company logo for you. Avoid hailing cabs on the street after dark when scams and express kidnappings are a higher risk.
- Registration for SIM cards — Buying a local prepaid SIM from Tigo, Viva, or Entel requires registering with your passport.
- Bus travel with caution — Always check for roadblock conditions before traveling between cities. Buses may be halted or you may need to cross a blockade on foot and pay a second fare. The bus terminal area is chaotic; keep luggage close to avoid pickpocketing.
- Stay in the north after dark — Accommodations between the bus terminal and the main square are convenient but unsafe late at night. Always take a cab back to these areas. Mid-range and higher-end hotels cluster around Plaza Colon and the Recoleta neighborhood to the north.
- Carry small bills and negotiate — Street money changers often give unfavorable rates for denominations under US$100. For taxis and market shopping, having small change in bolivianos is helpful.
