About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Ciudad Bolívar sits along the banks of the Orinoco River and serves as the capital of Bolívar state. Named for independence leader Simón Bolívar, the city was once known as Angostura — a nod to the narrow ribbon of water at Venezuela’s last navigable port.

Today it is best known as a practical launch point for excursions to Angel Falls. Travelers typically use the city to connect with tour operators and arrange onward trips into the Gran Sabana and Canaima National Park.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Arrange an Angel Falls expedition — the city is the traditional staging point for multi-day trips to the world’s tallest waterfall; local tour companies handle flights, river trips, and overnight camps.
  • Wander the colonial center — the compact historic core rewards a relaxed walk with pastel-painted buildings, small plazas, and river views.
  • Visit the Paseo Orinoco — this riverside promenade is the city’s social spine, best enjoyed during daylight hours for people-watching and breezes off the water.

  • November to March — the driest and most comfortable season, with warm temperatures averaging 27.3°C and very little rain, ideal for river trips.
  • December–February — peak tourism months when conditions for Angel Falls flights are most reliable, though tours should be booked in advance.
  • April–October — higher rainfall and humidity can disrupt travel to Canaima, but greenery is at its most lush and visitor numbers are lower.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Book Angel Falls tours in advance — operators are concentrated in Ciudad Bolívar, but availability narrows quickly in the dry season.
  • Use taxis after dark — call a taxi rather than walking at night; street availability drops sharply.
  • Plan daytime activities — schedule sightseeing and riverside walks before sunset when the city center empties out.
  • Allow long travel days for bus journeys — overland connections from Caracas or Santa Elena de Uairén each take around eight hours.
