About this place
Christchurch is the South Island's largest city and a major gateway for international visitors. Set on the east coast, it serves as the hub of the Canterbury region and offers the most attractions of any South Island destination. The city is steadily reinventing itself after the devastating 2011 earthquake, with innovative 'gapfiller' projects and a hip scene emerging in the inner suburbs.
Known as the Garden City, Christchurch is defined by its lush suburban tree cover, the meandering Avon River, and an English heritage that survives in its remaining stone buildings. While construction and vacant lots are still common, the city is fully open and welcoming to visitors.

Things to Do
- Cricket — Catch a match at Hagley Oval, the city's premier cricket ground.
- Heritage tram loop — Ride the central-city heritage tram; best treated as a sightseeing experience rather than practical transport.
- Explore the Avon River — Punt or kayak along the river winding through the city centre for a relaxed perspective on the gardens and heritage precinct.
- Festivals and events — Check the Christchurch City Council website for a directory of smaller community events and seasonal festivals throughout the year.

Best Time to Visit
- Early December to early April — The most comfortable window for exploring, with mild to warm temperatures averaging 16.1°C and low rainfall around 1.6 mm per day.
- Summer (Dec–Feb) — Long daylight hours (5:45AM to 9PM) and warm days, though the Nor'wester wind can bring occasional heat spikes above 35°C.
- Shoulder seasons — Spring and autumn offer pleasant conditions with fewer crowds, though winter snowfalls and short days require more planning.

Planning Tips
- Fly into Christchurch Airport — Well-connected by public buses (routes 8, 29, 3) taking about 30 minutes to the city centre for $6, or $3 with a Metrocard.
- Get a Metrocard — The city bus network covers key visitor areas like Sumner, New Brighton, Lyttelton, and the Gondola; a Metrocard caps daily fares after two paid trips and weekly fares at $24.
- Use the scenic trains — The TranzAlpine to Greymouth and the Coastal Pacific to Picton (connecting to Wellington ferries) are spectacular day-trip or through-journey options.
- Drive or bike for flexibility — Flat, grid-pattern streets and a 30 km/h central-city speed limit make cycling safe and popular; rental cars are widely available, mostly near the airport.
