About this place
Chongqing (重庆; Chóngqìng) is fast becoming the most economically important city in interior West China, with an urban population of around 8.8 million. As one of China's four direct-controlled municipalities (the only one not on the east coast), it sits on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and serves as the launch point for scenic boat trips through the Three Gorges. The surrounding Chongqing Municipality also encompasses roughly 80,000 km² of countryside and smaller towns, home to about 30 million people total.
Long off the foreign tourist radar, Chongqing experienced a meteoric rise in popularity during the 2020s, with its futuristic downtown core becoming a favorite haunt of travel YouTubers. The city has a gritty, energetic character shaped by its hilly terrain and two rivers, and it offers a distinct cultural identity tied to its Sichuan heritage and "dockside culture." The spectacular Buddhist Dazu Rock Carvings — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — lie about three hours west of the city center.
Chongqing is notorious for hot, humid weather and significant smog, especially from October to March, which can be challenging for travelers with respiratory concerns.

Planning Tips
- Have your destination written in Chinese to show taxi drivers, as very few speak English. Collect hotel cards for easy reference.
- Use the metro as your primary mode of transit — it's air-conditioned, cheap, and has English announcements. Lines 1, 2, 3, and the Loop Line connect most major areas.
- When eating hot pot, choose reputable restaurants — in 2023 and 2025 some establishments were found illegally reusing leftover oil ("saliva oil").
- If you have respiratory issues, consider visiting outside the October–March high-smog season, and check air quality forecasts.
- Biking is not recommended in the city due to steep hills, confusing streets, and dangerous traffic. Stick to metro, taxi, or bus.
- Flights arrive at Terminal 2 (domestic) or Terminal 3 (domestic and international). A free shuttle runs between terminals (about 15 minutes).
