About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Cholula is a mid-size city in the Mexican state of Puebla, just 15 km west of the city of Puebla. With a population of about 150,000, it holds the distinction of being one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in North America, founded around 500 B.C. The city encompasses the smaller municipalities of San Andrés, San Pedro, and Santa Isabel Cholula.

Its defining landmark is the Great Pyramid of Cholula, the largest pyramid platform in the world, which now supports a Spanish-colonial church at its summit. Beyond the pyramid, Cholula is known for its vibrant university-town atmosphere, anchored by the Universidad de las Américas de Puebla, and for the sheer number of religious structures — more than 200 churches and famed 365 chapels that host celebrations almost every day of the year.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Getting there from Puebla — Frequent buses from CAPU (≈40 min, M$7.50) or the faster express bus from the Cholula-Puebla station near the center (≈20 min) are the easiest public links.
  • Getting around — Walking covers most central sights. If you stay longer, consider buying a cheap second-hand bicycle (M$400–500) like many locals do.
  • Taste the local cuisine — Look for Cholulteca soup, cecina tacos placeros, and the giant “orejas de elefante” tortilla. Wash it down with ponche de maíz azul or a foamy chocolate cold drink.
  • Bargain on taxi fares — A taxi from central Puebla to Cholula’s zócalo can cost as little as M$60 with negotiation; from CAPU expect around M$90.
