About this place
Chittoor is an agricultural market hub in southern Andhra Pradesh, set along the Ponni River valley and ringed by mango and tamarind groves. The city functions as the district headquarters and, before 1884, served as a British military post. Grain, sugarcane, peanuts, and jaggery from nearby Aragonda define the local economy, while hatcheries and mango production round out the pastoral landscape.
Its position roughly 72 km from Tirupati makes Chittoor a practical base for pilgrims heading to the revered Balaji temple. The surroundings also include wildlife sanctuaries and the Horsley Hills hill resort, offering a mix of spiritual and nature-focused day-trip options.

Planning Tips
- Use government buses — APSRTC and KSRTC services run frequently from Bangalore, Chennai, and Tirupati and make fewer stops than private coaches; avoid Kalasipalya private buses for Bangalore–Chittoor trips.
- Book rail connections early — Trains such as the Venkatadri Express from Hyderabad or Sheshadri/Sabari Express from eastern Andhra fill up, especially during pilgrimage season.
- Pack light cottons and a hat — Temperatures regularly exceed 35°C even in the shoulder months; sun protection is essential.
- Stock up on local specialties — Mango pickles, jaggery from Aragonda, and fresh pala kova make good edible souvenirs.
- Combine Tirupati with Chittoor — Stay in Chittoor for lower prices and a quieter atmosphere, then drive or take a short bus to the Balaji temple complex.
