About this place
Chita sits in Zabaykalsky Krai on a major land-trading route to China, giving this former restricted military city a raw, rapidly evolving character. New high-rises spring up beside weather-beaten wooden cottages, and winter temperatures can plunge to -40°C.
Many Trans-Siberian travelers skip Chita for Irkutsk or Ulan Ude, but those who stop find a place where Siberian hospitality runs deep. Foreign visitors are still a curiosity, and even brief conversations with locals tend to be warmly rewarded.

Planning Tips
- Learn a few Russian phrases — English is not widely spoken, though younger students may know some; persistence and politeness go a long way.
- Use marshrutkas from the airport — look for taxibuses marked 'аэропорт' near the train station to avoid pricey taxi rides.
- Negotiate taxi fares away from the station — walk a short distance into a side street and agree on a price upfront for a much better rate.
- English-speaker back-up — if you need help, the Faculty of Foreign Languages on Babushkina/Butina is a reliable place to find English speakers.
