About this place

Last updated Jul 13, 2026

Chipata is a busy, growing town in Eastern Zambia that serves as a key stopover for overlanders heading between Lusaka, Malawi, and South Luangwa National Park. With about 320,000 residents and a steady flow of travelers, it feels more like a practical hub than a traditional tourist destination. The town’s layout follows the Great East Road, which turns into the Umodzi Highway toward the Malawian border, with Lundazi Road branching north to Mfuwe and beyond.

While the town itself offers few conventional sights, its cultural calendar stands out. The Ncwala festival in late February and the Kulamba ceremony in August bring vibrant Ngoni and Chewa traditions to life, drawing participants from neighboring countries. For most visitors, Chipata is a comfortable place to refuel, restock, and recharge before continuing a journey through the region.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 13, 2026
  • Border logistics — The Malawian border is about 22 km east along the T4 highway; shared taxis run the route in 30–40 minutes and you may need to switch vehicles on the Zambian side.
  • Getting around — Blue cabs are plentiful but unmetered, so negotiate fares before the trip; bicycle rentals are also available for low-cost exploration.
  • Festival timing — If aiming for Ncwala or Kulamba, confirm exact dates locally as they can shift slightly from year to year.
  • Cash and cards — ATMs in town accept major international cards, but it is still wise to carry some local currency for smaller guesthouses and market purchases.
