Things to Do
- Paseo del Pendón festival — Held the Sunday before Christmas, this massive celebration dating back to 1825 features over 1,500 dance groups performing in the streets. The iconic Tlacoleros dance, with its thunderous stamping and jaguar masks, is a highlight.
- Explore Grutas de Juxtlahuaca — About 45 km southeast of the city, this natural cave system contains Olmec drawings from around 1200-900 BC. The caves are open to the public, but hiring a local guide is required to visit.
- Visit Gral. Juan Alvarez National Park — Roughly 50 km east of Chilpancingo, this remote mountainous park is covered in pine and oak forests. Wildlife sightings may include lynx, coyote, deer, iguana, and various birds of prey.
