About this place
Pilsen is a working-class, predominantly Mexican-American neighborhood just minutes from downtown Chicago. Its streets are lined with historic architecture that survived the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, colorful murals, and a proud community spirit that makes it feel both distinctly Chicagoan and entirely unique. Originally settled by Irish, German, Czech, and Polish immigrants, Pilsen became the heart of Chicago's Mexican-American community in the 1960s. Today, it's known for its thriving arts scene, authentic taquerías, and cultural institutions like the National Museum of Mexican Art — all set against a backdrop of ornate 19th-century buildings.

Planning Tips
- Getting there: Take the CTA Orange Line to Halsted for East Pilsen, or the Pink Line to 18th for West Pilsen. The 18th station has notable murals worth a look even if passing through.
- Parking: Avoid leaving valuables in your car in East Pilsen, especially during the 2nd Fridays Art Walk — opt for a well-lit spot or leave items at your hotel.
- Art walk timing: If you're interested in the East Pilsen art scene, plan your visit around the second Friday of the month (6PM–10PM) when most studios open to the public.
- Walking between East and West: It's a long but manageable walk between the two halves at 18th and Halsted and 18th and Ashland; the quiet zone in between has fewer points of interest.
- Nightlife logistics: Last trains on the Orange and Pink lines run around 1:15AM toward the Loop — check the time if you're staying out late.
- Italian dining detour: For Italian food, take the Pink Line to Western and walk a few blocks south to the 2400 South block of Oakley in Heart of Chicago.
