Chiayi City is a laid-back southern Taiwan city of about 270,000 people, best known as the gateway to the Alishan mountain area. It has a friendly, country-town feel and serves as a convenient base for both the high-speed rail network and the scenic narrow-gauge Alishan Forest Railway.

Visitors can explore a compact city center on foot, with Culture Road as the main artery for shopping, night-market snacking, and people-watching. Chiayi is especially famous for its turkey rice, a local specialty available at countless small eateries around town.
