About this place
Chiang Rai serves as the commercial heart of the Golden Triangle region where Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos meet. With a town population of around 62,000, it functions as an excellent base for exploring the surrounding province and nearby border areas. The city itself is compact and walkable, though tuk-tuks, songthaews, and ride-hailing services make longer trips easy.
The character here is distinctly Northern Thai — different from Chiang Mai to the south. The local cuisine is notably spicier, and the ethnic composition includes a significant number of hill tribe communities and Burmese exiles. This cultural mix shapes everything from the food to the handicrafts found in local markets.

Planning Tips
- Use the airport bus — An air-conditioned bus connects the airport to central Chiang Rai every 20–40 minutes for just 20 baht.
- Pre-paid taxis save hassle — At the airport, hire a pre-paid taxi from the desk rather than negotiating with metered drivers who often refuse the meter.
- Book Greenbus tickets online — Check timetables and reserve seats in advance for routes to Chiang Mai, Chiang Khong, or northeastern Thailand.
- Bring cash for songthaews — The shared minibus between the two bus terminals takes about 15 minutes; have small notes ready and be patient if the driver waits for more passengers.
- Walking covers the center — Save on transport by exploring the city center, temples, and markets on foot.
