About this place
Chiang Mai, the former capital of the ancient Lanna kingdom, is a culturally rich city set in the rolling foothills of the Himalayas. Its historic heart is the walled old city, a compact area surrounded by a moat and dotted with over 30 temples that blend Burmese, Sri Lankan, and Lanna Thai styles. The city has expanded well beyond its ancient walls, especially toward the Ping River, where night markets and lively entertainment districts draw visitors nightly.
The east side of the old city buzzes with guesthouses, restaurants, and travel services, while the west side retains a more local, everyday feel. Whether you're exploring temple-studded mountainsides, sampling a bowl of khao soi noodles, or wandering the famous Night Bazaar, Chiang Mai offers a distinctive northern Thai experience that's both cosmopolitan and deeply traditional.

Things to Do
- Hiking and nature tours — Multi-day treks visit hill tribe villages, elephant sanctuaries, and waterfalls, with packages typically including a guide, basic meals, and accommodation in a local village.
- Rafting on the Mae Tang River — Water levels rise during the rainy season (June–October), creating exciting rapids; the dry season offers a gentler ride suitable for more relaxed outings.
- Visit Doi Inthanon — Thailand's tallest mountain features hill tribe villages on its foothills and cooler temperatures, making it a popular day trip from the city.
- Explore the 'Sticky Waterfall' — The Bua Tong Waterfall's unique limestone rocks provide enough grip to climb directly up the cascades, set within lush green surroundings.

Planning Tips
- Book sleeper trains early — Popular overnight services from Bangkok can sell out weeks ahead, so secure tickets up to 180 days in advance via official channels.
- Use ride-hailing apps — Apps like Grab and Bolt often cost less than haggling with tuk-tuks, and they provide air-conditioned comfort with upfront pricing.
- Drink only bottled or filtered water — Tap water is not safe for consumption, but street-side refill machines offer an affordable and eco-friendly alternative.
- Keep your passport with you — Never leave your passport as a deposit when renting motorbikes; most shops will accept a photocopy and a cash deposit instead.
- Avoid burning season if sensitive — If you have respiratory concerns, plan your visit outside the late February–April window when smoke levels are highest.
