About this place

Last updated Aug 2, 2026

Chetumal is the capital of Quintana Roo, set on a sheltered Caribbean bay that forms the border with Belize. Far quieter than the resort cities to the north, it offers a genuine mix of Mexican and Belizean influences alongside a deep Mayan history — the city is known as the Cuna del Mestizaje, or cradle of the Mestizo. With a population of about 260,000, it feels more like a working state capital than a beach destination, yet its waterfront boulevard and nearby fishing village bring a relaxed, coastal pace.

The city is a practical gateway for overland travelers moving between Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala. It rewards visitors who use it as a base for exploring archaeological sites in the surrounding region, sampling local seafood, and experiencing a multicultural urban center where Spanish, Maya, Creole, and Arabic are spoken side by side.

Planning Tips

Last updated Aug 2, 2026
  • Arrive by bus from major hubs — Frequent ADO and Mayab buses connect Chetumal to Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum; the old ADO terminal near Av. Insurgentes handles international arrivals from Belize.
  • Consider the Belize ferry — San Pedro Belize Express runs an air-conditioned boat from San Pedro and Caye Caulker in Belize, docking at the Municipal Pier in Chetumal — a scenic alternative to the land border.
  • Taxis are affordable — Short hops within the city cost about M$25–30 (as of April 2022), and drivers are generally honest about directing you where you want to go.
  • Prepare for possible border fees — When exiting Mexico into Belize, you may be asked to pay a Quintana Roo tourist tax of M$594, though enforcement can be inconsistent.
  • Pack light for colectivos — If arriving from Bacalar or Xul-Ha by shared van, note that combis lack a trunk, so luggage must fit at your seat.
